Aurizon Culvert Replacement- Mt Buckley

Aurizon Structures FY24 Package A consisted of four separable portions of five culvert replacements over the 2023 period. These works included removing and replacing structures ranging from RCBC’s to Twincell units located in Bowen and Central Queensland. The works required stakeholder management for mines and private landowner access, mobilisation of resources up to ~500km from depot. The largest and most complex separable portion being the twincell replacement on the Newlands line off Mt Buckley where the precast units weighed up to 30t and required strong coordination of crane movements. Service locating activities identified groundwater close to the surface in excavation areas in preworks, contingencies were created and on-site conditions during the shutdown yielded an unsuitable assessment double the anticipated depth. Due to the size of the structure, a demolition supervisor was required devise and monitor the removal of the two structures. A stressing contractor was utilised for the stressing aspects of the works.

• Complex project management – multiple work fronts in different localities

• Shutdown conditions – 60-108hr closures requiring strict adherence to the critical path.

• Major unsuitable replacement with rock mattress planned as site was close to the water table.

• Management of critical path deviation in shut down conditions due to unsuitable replacement being double the industry standard/expectations.

• Concrete stressing

• Value ~7mil
